What is a UUID?

A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is a 128-bit identifier that is unique across space and time. UUIDs are used to identify information in computer systems without requiring central coordination.

Version 4 UUIDs are randomly generated. The probability of generating duplicate UUIDs is so low that it's considered practically impossible — you'd need to generate 1 billion UUIDs per second for about 85 years to have a 50% chance of a collision.
